2020 was an interesting year to say the least. Here at the YMCA Bundaberg (BYMCA) we believe that the diversity of our organisation enabled us to navigate what was a challenging twelve months. With the onset of lockdowns imposed early in 2020, closure of fitness centres, 60 and Better program, the drop off in numbers at child care in Stage 1, the change to 1:1 supports in CIS all made this period a challenge and ultimately a success for our organisation. The Childcare and Kindergarten, Community Inclusion Service (CIS), and the Youth Services continued to operate as they were deemed essential services which greatly benefited our local community.
Due to the various lockdowns and interruptions to services we embarked on some maintenance and repairs to the BYMCA during 2020. The Bundaberg Fitness Centre was repainted and the aerobics room has had a facelift providing our members with a better experience and improved sound quality. Watch this space for more exciting news!
Particular mention goes to our fitness centre staff who came in and helped with the cleaning of the fitness centres, delivery of streamed fitness programs and in some instances willingness to work in other programs whilst the mandatory closure was enforced. Their dedication and commitment to ensuring the safety of our patrons and clients are truly commendable.
One of the highlights of the year was seeing some of our staff working across different departments to help others during what has been a difficult year for our members. Many of our staff moved over into our 60 and Better Program, calling, emailing and offering various activities online for our Senior members. This fostered a greater sense of community and companionship for everyone.
When schools closed down we saw the need for more support for local families with school aged children increase dramatically. Our Community Inclusion Service (CIS) was pivotal for many families who found themselves in need of learning support when their kids were unable to attend school for a number of weeks. Because of the increased demand for services we were able to employee additional staff to meet those needs and support our community. We continue to invest in our people and are very thankful for our partnership with East Coast Apprenticeships who continue to upskill and build capability into our people to ensure we have a reliable workforce.
All in all, 2020 was a challenging year but the YMCA Bundaberg has had some great opportunities to continue to support the local community with exceptional programs. It may have looked very different last year to what we have known previously, but we are excited for new things on the horizon for 2021. We hope you enjoy hearing more about our various programs and the new ventures we are exploring to serve you better!
